Throughout the school P.E. plays a significant role in the timetable, with all classes having 2 hours of quality P.E. per week. Lessons follow a structured plan; they keep children active and help develop all of the essential skills and control children need to take part in P.E. Children will be taught to apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. We also provide swimming instruction, where children are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 23 metres.
At Shirley Heath, we provide many opportunities for children to take part in competitive sport, offering a wide range of out of school clubs and taking part in competitions within school and against local schools. Children are encouraged to practise their skills in game situations and to evaluate and improve their own performances.
We are currently using the new government funding to further improve skills teaching; improve competitive sport in and out of school and provide more opportunities to promote and improve fitness and healthy lifestyle choices.
