At Shirley Heath we value each and every child and we are fully aware of the need for our children to be happy, confident and secure in order to learn effectively. We know that children need to receive support and guidance in order to understand themselves and their feelings, manage conflicts and overcome difficulties, and to form and maintain healthy relationships with adults and peers. In order to achieve these aims, we follow the SEAL programme which stands for Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning.

 As a school we are hugely invested in helping children to develop their awareness of the factors which lead to a healthy life, and were delighted to receive our Enhanced Healthy Schools Status recently. Following the Enhanced Healthy Schools model, and through a Personal and Social Development curriculum, aspects of relationships with others, personal hygiene and diet are taught in line with the ethos promoted in school. Provisions are made to take into account the development into puberty, and lessons are delivered according to a programme approved by the governors. Parents are informed of lessons on this sensitive topic prior to the programme being taught. Our sex and relationships programme consists of:
