Design and Technology

Our vision:

At Shirley Heath, we believe that the teaching and learning of Design Technology is essential to prepare our pupils for life beyond education within the modern world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of design technology: each unit begins with a direct link, through an ‘investigation’ lesson, to an important event or individual which has shaped the world that we know today. Throughout a series of engaging units, children also learn and understand how to use a range tools and equipment safely; they have the opportunity to build upon these skills each year within exciting tasks and real life contexts. The Design Technology curriculum at Shirley Heath enables all children to develop their creativity and imagination as each pupil designs, makes and evaluates their own products in a variety of contexts. They will also acquire subject knowledge and skills that draw upon other areas of their learning such as Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art. Children at Shirley Heath will be encouraged to take risks and become progressively more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable pupils.
