Our School Community

Every child and family at Shirley Heath will have their own knowledge and experiences that will link to their culture and wider family. This might include languages, beliefs, traditions, cultural and family heritage, interests, travel and work. Research shows that when children and families’ cultures are valued, both the child’s experience of learning and progress can benefit (Husain et al., 2018, p. 4 and Gazzard, E. 2018 in Chalmers, H. and Crisfield, E. 2019). It is important that we celebrate the diverse cultures and heritage of the children and families at Shirley Heath, and those around the world, learning from each other through assemblies, enrichment days, trips and visitors, celebrations of festivals and sharing cultural stories.

Communication and Interaction, which includes Autism, is the Primary area of Special Educational Need at Shirley Heath. For this reason, during week beginning 21st April 2023, we recognised World Autism Acceptance Week in school. The SENCo and Autism Lead led assemblies on Celebrating Difference and understanding more about Autism. Books and resources about Autism were shared and children learnt about famous people with SEND.
